Basic causes of male infertility are low sperm count, poor sperm mobility and poor sperm quality. Below is a chart explaining what are the factors that cause male infertility.

Semen Analysis

• Semen is the fluid containing sperm (plus other sugar and protein substances) that’s released during male ejaculation.
• A semen analysis measures three major factors of sperm health: sperm count, sperm size and shape, also knowns as sperm morphology, the movement of the sperm, also known as "sperm motility".
• A semen analysis is generally the first infertility testing procedure performed during a couple’s fertility assessment because it is non-invasive and can tell us a great deal.

Sperm Count

• Sperm count is dependent on two main factors, Sperm concentration and sperm volume.
• Low sperm count means that the fluid (semen) you ejaculate during an orgasm contains fewer sperm than normal.
• Lower volumes are sometimes associated with blockage and/or retrograde ejaculation (ejaculation that refluxes into the bladder).
• Decreased counts can indicate abnormal or impaired spermatogenesis or blockage while increased counts are often found in cases of prolonged abstinence.

Sperm Morphology

• Sperm morphology — the size and shape of sperm — is one factor that’s examined as part of a semen analysis to evaluate male infertility.
• The deformities on shape and size of sperm might affect the ability of the sperm to reach and penetrate an egg.
• According to recent WHO guidelines, if 4 percent or more sperms of total are morphologically normal than semen is reported as having normal morphology.

Sperm Motility

• Sperm motility describes the ability of sperm to move properly through the female reproductive tract (internal fertilization) or through fertilisation media (external fertilization) to reach the egg.
• A man might have a normal or high sperm count, but if his sperm motility (i.e. ability to swim) is low it may hinder your ability to conceive. Motility is, simply put, the way sperm move.
• Excessive stress, exposure of genitals to excessive heat, poor diet and side effect of medication can cause poor sperm motility and quality.

Physical Examination

• Physical examination helps in identifying most common causes of male infertility.
• By examining reproductive organs, an experienced Urologist can identify common causes like problems with size, firmness, position and Swelling of Testis.
• Checking the size of the testicles is helpful. Smaller-sized and softer testicles along with tests that show low sperm count are strongly associated with problems in sperm formation. Normal testicles accompanied by a low sperm count, however, suggest possible obstruction.
